Rangers' Bullpen Boost: Will Shawn Armstrong Return?
It's a crucial offseason for the Texas Rangers, and the bullpen is a key area of focus. One of the team's top relievers from the 2025 season, Shawn Armstrong, is hoping to return to Texas. According to reports from DLLS Sports' Jeff Wilson, Armstrong is seeking a two-year contract, indicating a desire for stability and a continued role with the team.
Armstrong, a right-handed pitcher, had a standout season in 2025. He pitched a career-high 74 innings, showcasing his durability and effectiveness. His performance included a stellar 2.31 ERA (with a 3.07 FIP), a solid 26.1% strikeout rate, and a commendable 7.0% walk rate. He also proved difficult to hit, with opponents managing only a 34.2% hard-hit rate. But here's where it gets interesting: Armstrong's arsenal includes a fastball averaging 93.5 mph, complemented by a cutter, sinker, sweeper, and slurve. He uses all his pitches with almost equal frequency, except for the slurve.
The Rangers face a significant rebuild of their bullpen this offseason, with several key players entering free agency. Bringing back Armstrong, who led the team's bullpen with 1.3 fWAR and 1.5 bWAR, could be a smart move. Having him secured for the 2027 season would also provide the Rangers with one less concern to address next offseason.
Armstrong's MLB journey began with the Cleveland Indians in 2015. Over parts of three seasons, he posted a 3.53 ERA. He then moved to the Seattle Mariners, Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Rays, Miami Marlins, St. Louis Cardinals, and Chicago Cubs. His career has seen its share of ups and downs, including a standout 2020 season with the Orioles where he managed a 1.80 ERA. He also had a very good 2023 with Tampa Bay, where he posted a 1.38 ERA.
