Imagine facing a cancer diagnosis, the treatments, the side effects... Now imagine needing urgent care, but the only option is a crowded, germ-filled Emergency Department. That's the reality Rosemary Walker wanted to change, and her story will inspire you.
Inspired by her personal experience with Sunnybrook’s Oncology Urgent Care Unit (ONUC), Rosemary is a passionate advocate for this innovative approach to cancer care. It's all about keeping vulnerable oncology patients out of the often-overwhelmed Emergency Department.
The Oncology Urgent Care Unit, a specialized part of the Odette Cancer Program, is more than just a clinic; it's a lifeline for medical oncology patients. This unique space provides comprehensive, wraparound care, specifically designed to address the urgent and complex needs that arise during their cancer journey. Think treatment side effects that suddenly worsen, or other acute health concerns that demand immediate attention.
The mission is simple: to provide the right care, at the right time. Even seemingly minor issues, like a sudden fever, persistent nausea, or dehydration, can quickly escalate into serious complications for cancer patients. The ONUC ensures they receive immediate attention from experts who understand the nuances of their condition.
Time is of the essence, especially during the most challenging days of cancer treatment.
Rosemary experienced this firsthand. When her sister, Sandy, developed a fever that wouldn't break, Rosemary knew immediate care was crucial. Normally, this would mean a trip to the Emergency Department – a daunting prospect for someone with a compromised immune system. But because they had access to the ONUC, Sandy received personalized urgent care, a tailored follow-up treatment plan, and, crucially, avoided unnecessary exposure to other potentially infectious patients.
That's the power of the Oncology Urgent Care Unit model. It's not just about convenience; it's about safety, specialized knowledge, and peace of mind.
Dr. Michael Raphael, a Medical Oncologist at Sunnybrook, understands the impact of this specialized care. "The ONUC allows us to provide focused attention to our oncology patients, addressing their urgent needs in a setting designed specifically for them," he explains.
After a courageous battle with cancer, Sandy Walker passed away in October 2024. But her memory lives on through Rosemary's unwavering commitment. Rosemary is determined to carry forward a legacy of gratitude, advocacy, and community fundraising. She's working tirelessly to ensure that more patients and their families have access to the remarkable level of support, comfort, and individualized care that makes the Oncology Urgent Care Unit so special.

But here’s where it gets controversial... Some might argue that all hospitals should have the resources to provide this level of specialized care, regardless of a patient's specific condition. Is it fair that only oncology patients have access to this type of urgent care model? What do you think?
And this is the part most people miss... The ONUC is not just about treating symptoms; it's about empowering patients and their families during a vulnerable time. It's about providing education, support, and a sense of control in the face of a challenging diagnosis.
